PINK AMETHYST: THE CURIOUS STORY BEHIND THIS UNUSUAL PINK QUARTZ

Pink Amethyst is one of those crystals that makes you stop and look twice.

At first glance, it seems like someone has taken Amethyst and turned the colour down from purple to pink. But look a little closer and things get considerably more interesting.

What exactly makes it pink?

Is it really Amethyst?

Is it Rose Quartz?

And why does it sometimes grow as beautiful little crystals inside geodes rather than looking like the familiar cloudy, massive Rose Quartz we're used to seeing?

The answer is wonderfully complicated.

Pink Amethyst is quartz, just like Amethyst and Rose Quartz. But the way its colour develops can be quite different, and the name itself is still debated among mineral collectors and scientists.

That makes it a particularly fascinating member of the quartz family.

And, admittedly, one of my favourites.

WHAT IS PINK AMETHYST?

Pink Amethyst is a name used for naturally pink quartz material, particularly the distinctive pink quartz crystals found in geodes from El Choique in Patagonia, Argentina.

A scientific study published in The Mineralogical Record in 2020 examined the El Choique material and described it as a new colour variety of quartz. The geodes first appeared on the international mineral market at a gem fair in Brazil in 2017.

The important word here is quartz.

Its chemical formula is:

SiO₂

So Pink Amethyst isn't a completely different mineral hiding somewhere between Amethyst and Rose Quartz.

It is quartz.

The interesting part is why that quartz is pink.

WHY IS PINK AMETHYST PINK?

This is where the story gets wonderfully microscopic.

Researchers studying the El Choique material found that its colour involves iron-related colour centres in the quartz, similar to the mechanism responsible for the purple colour of traditional Amethyst.

Natural irradiation plays a role in creating these colour centres.

But there is another ingredient too.

Tiny inclusions of hematite, some only a few micrometres across, contribute additional red colouring to the quartz. The combination produces the distinctive pink to purplish-pink appearance of the material.

So this isn't simply clear quartz with a little pink mineral dust sprinkled through it.

The colour is connected to processes happening at a microscopic level within the quartz and its inclusions.

And that is one of the things I love about minerals.

Sometimes the reason a crystal looks the way it does is hiding somewhere far too small for our eyes to see.

SO... IS PINK AMETHYST ACTUALLY AMETHYST?

This is where things get interesting.

Traditionally, Amethyst is the purple or violet variety of quartz.

So if we use the traditional definition strictly, calling a pink crystal “Amethyst” sounds a little contradictory.

And some mineral collectors do object to the name for exactly that reason.

However, the scientists who studied the El Choique material found that its iron-related colour mechanism has a significant connection to the mechanism responsible for Amethyst's purple colour.

They therefore proposed “Pink Amethyst” as an appropriate name for this particular material.

So the honest answer is:

Pink Amethyst is quartz, and its name reflects its relationship to Amethyst's colour mechanism, but the terminology isn't universally agreed upon.

And I think that's much more interesting than pretending the mineral world has already reached a unanimous verdict.

PINK AMETHYST VS ROSE QUARTZ

This is probably the question I see coming most often:

“Isn't Pink Amethyst just Rose Quartz?”

No. But the reason is worth explaining.

Both are quartz.

Both can be pink.

But their geological stories can be quite different.

ROSE QUARTZ

Most familiar Rose Quartz occurs in massive form, rather than as obvious individual crystals with flat crystal faces.

Research has found that the characteristic pink colour of massive Rose Quartz is associated with incredibly tiny fibrous inclusions. These fibres are closely related to dumortierite, although researchers found that they don't perfectly match ordinary dumortierite in every analytical test.

Rose Quartz therefore often has that lovely soft, cloudy or translucent appearance that we're familiar with.

PINK AMETHYST

The scientifically studied El Choique material is quite different.

It occurs as well-formed quartz crystals lining geodes, and its pink colour is associated with an iron-related colour mechanism plus microscopic hematite inclusions.

So although both materials are pink quartz, they can have quite different internal stories.

AND THEN THERE'S PINK QUARTZ...

Because apparently quartz wasn't complicated enough already. 😂

There is also a rare form of crystalline pink quartz that is different from the familiar massive Rose Quartz.

Rare transparent pink crystalline quartz can form beautiful clusters of well-developed crystals, and its colour mechanism is different from that of ordinary massive Rose Quartz.

So we have:

Rose Quartz

Usually massive, pink quartz with microscopic fibrous inclusions.

Pink crystalline quartz / Pink Quartz

Rare crystalline pink quartz with a different colour mechanism.

Pink Amethyst

A name particularly associated with the distinctive pink quartz from El Choique and its specific colour mechanism.

All three are quartz.

But pink does not automatically mean they're the same material.

This is a lovely example of why colour alone isn't enough to identify a mineral variety.

THE STORY OF EL CHOIQUE

One of the most fascinating chapters in the Pink Amethyst story comes from Patagonia, Argentina.

The El Choique mine is located in Pehuenches Department, Neuquén Province, and the locality is recorded as producing quartz geodes containing the material now commonly called Pink Amethyst.

The material first appeared on the international market in 2017.

That means Pink Amethyst, as we know this particular commercial material today, is a relatively recent addition to the mineral world.

The scientific study documenting the El Choique material followed in 2020.

I think that's rather wonderful.

We often talk about minerals as though every interesting variety has been known forever.

But sometimes a new deposit appears, collectors notice something unusual, and suddenly mineralogists have a new puzzle to solve.

WHAT'S INSIDE A PINK AMETHYST GEODE?

The famous El Choique specimens occur as geodes lined with quartz crystals.

A geode is essentially a hollow or partly hollow space within rock that has later become lined with minerals.

In the El Choique material, quartz crystals can occur alongside minerals including calcite, analcime, baryte, celestine, gypsum and lithiophorite.

The result can be spectacular.

Instead of one solid lump of pink material, you can get a little geological cavity covered in hundreds of tiny crystals.

And when one of those geodes is opened, you're essentially looking at a mineral-lined snapshot of the conditions that existed inside the rock as those crystals formed.

HOW SCIENTISTS KNOW IT'S DIFFERENT

This isn't simply a case of someone looking at a pretty pink crystal and deciding it deserves a new name.

The El Choique material has been studied using several analytical techniques, including optical and spectroscopic methods, Raman analysis and microchemical analysis.

The research identified two important types of iron-related contributions to the colour:

• an iron colour centre responsible for the purplish component

• microscopic hematite inclusions contributing additional red colouring

This is why the El Choique material became particularly interesting to mineralogists.

It wasn't simply another pink rock.

Its colour mechanism gave researchers a reason to consider how it relates to both traditional Amethyst and other pink quartz varieties.

WHY DOES PINK AMETHYST LOOK SO DIFFERENT FROM ROSE QUARTZ?

One of the easiest ways to understand the difference is simply to look at the crystals themselves.

Typical Rose Quartz is usually massive, meaning you don't see individual crystal faces.

Pink Amethyst from the famous Patagonian material can occur as individual hexagonal quartz crystals lining a geode.

That difference alone can make the two materials look dramatically different even though both are quartz.

And it gives us a nice reminder:

A mineral's appearance isn't just about its chemical formula.

Crystal structure, growth conditions, inclusions, defects, impurities and geological environment can all contribute to the final appearance.

Quartz is a particularly good example because it manages to produce an astonishing variety of colours and forms while remaining the same basic mineral species.

LEGENDS & LORE

Now we come to one of my favourite parts of any crystal article.

But there is an important little historical wrinkle here.

Pink Amethyst itself does not have an ancient Greek mythology.

The particular Patagonian material that inspired the modern Pink Amethyst story only appeared on the mineral market in 2017.

So if someone tells you that the ancient Greeks had a special tradition about Pink Amethyst, we should be rather suspicious.

They couldn't have.

But Amethyst itself has a fascinating ancient history, and that's where our story begins.

AMETHYST, DIONYSUS & THE ANCIENT GREEKS

The Greek name amethystos is connected with the idea of being “not drunken” or “not intoxicated”.

Ancient writers really did record beliefs connecting Amethyst with protection from drunkenness.

Pliny the Elder, writing in the first century CE, discussed Amethyst in his Natural History and reported claims that the stone could prevent intoxication. He was decidedly unimpressed by these claims and described them as the sort of things attributed to the stone by magicians.

So here's the fascinating distinction:

The ancient belief is real.

The scientific effect is not.

Amethyst does not chemically prevent alcohol intoxication.

But people genuinely did associate the stone with sobriety.

And there is another wonderful Dionysus connection.

Roman and Greek gem cutters used Amethyst for engraved gems featuring Dionysus and other mythological imagery. A Roman amethyst ring stone dating from the 1st–2nd century CE depicts Dionysus, the god of wine, wearing a wreath of vine leaves.

So we don't have to invent a connection between Amethyst and Dionysus.

People really did carve Dionysus into Amethyst.

That is far more interesting.

THE FAMOUS AMETHYSTOS STORY

You may have heard the story of a young woman named Amethystos who was pursued by Dionysus, transformed into white quartz by Artemis, and then stained purple by Dionysus' wine.

It's a wonderful story.

But there's a problem.

It isn't an ancient Greek myth.

The story appears in the work of French Renaissance poet Rémy Belleau, whose 1576 poem L'Amethyste, ou les Amours de Bacchus et d'Amethyste imagined a story explaining the origin of the gemstone.

Later retellings have added variations, including the famous version involving Dionysus' tigers.

So we absolutely can tell this story in a crystal article.

We just need to tell the truth about it:

It is a genuine historical piece of literature and folklore, but it is not an ancient Greek myth.

And honestly, I think that makes it even more interesting.

Someone in the sixteenth century looked at an ancient gemstone tradition and thought:

“There must be a story behind this.”

So they wrote one.

That's folklore doing what folklore has always done: turning something fascinating into a story.

PINK AMETHYST IN MODERN CRYSTAL TRADITIONS

Pink Amethyst has also developed its own place within modern crystal culture.

It is commonly associated with themes such as:

• love

• compassion

• emotional gentleness

• self-love

• peace

• spiritual connection

• emotional balance

These are modern crystal traditions, not scientifically demonstrated properties.

There is no scientific evidence that Pink Amethyst can treat illness, alter a person's emotions, or produce specific physical or psychological effects.

But symbolism can still be meaningful.

And Pink Amethyst has a rather lovely symbolic story of its own.

It sits between familiar and unusual.

It is connected to the long history of Amethyst, but doesn't quite fit the traditional purple definition.

It resembles Rose Quartz, but has a different geological story.

It is a reminder that nature doesn't always cooperate with the neat categories humans like to create.

WHY PINK AMETHYST IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITES

I'll admit it.

Pink Amethyst is one of my favourite stones.

Part of that is simply because I love the way it looks.

But the more I learned about it, the more I liked it for another reason.

It's a crystal that refuses to give you a simple answer.

Is it Amethyst?

Well... sort of.

Is it Rose Quartz?

No.

Is it Pink Quartz?

That's complicated too.

Is the name universally accepted?

No.

Is the material itself real?

Absolutely.

And that's precisely what makes it fascinating.

A beautiful crystal doesn't have to fit perfectly into one little box to be worth loving.

Sometimes the interesting ones are the ones that make us ask better questions.

HOW SHOULD YOU CARE FOR PINK AMETHYST?

Pink Amethyst is quartz, with a Mohs hardness of 7, so it is reasonably durable for everyday display and handling.

That doesn't mean it is impossible to damage, though.

Crystal points can chip, geode edges can be fragile, and druzy surfaces can be more delicate than a smooth polished crystal.

Gentle care is best:

• Dust with a soft cloth or soft brush.

• Avoid harsh chemical cleaners.

• Avoid abrasive materials that could scratch the surface.

• Handle points and geode edges carefully.

• For specimens with delicate druzy surfaces, avoid vigorous scrubbing.

• If preserving the original colour is important, avoid prolonged exposure to intense light.

As with all crystals, care should take the actual specimen into account, especially if it contains other minerals or has a delicate surface.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Pink Amethyst is a wonderful example of why I love learning about minerals.

At first, it looks simple.

It's pink quartz.

Then you start asking questions.

Why is it pink?

Why does it look different from Rose Quartz?

Why does it grow in these beautiful geodes?

Why do some people call it Amethyst while others aren't convinced by the name?

And suddenly you're looking at microscopic iron-related colour centres, hematite inclusions, quartz crystal growth, geological deposits in Patagonia and a centuries-old story about Dionysus.

That's the fun of minerals.

The deeper you look, the more stories you find.

And Pink Amethyst has quite a story for such a pretty little crystal.
