Why Crystal Hardness Matters

At first glance, it might seem like just another technical detail, but it's actually one of the most useful things you can know as a crystal collector.

Understanding crystal hardness helps you care for your collection, store your crystals safely and understand why some stones need a little more gentle handling than others.

The good news is that the Mohs Scale is much simpler than it sounds.

What is the Mohs Hardness Scale?

The Mohs Hardness Scale is a simple system used to measure how resistant a mineral is to being scratched.

Developed in 1812 by German mineralogist Friedrich Mohs, the scale ranks minerals from 1 (very soft) to 10 (the hardest naturally occurring mineral, diamond).

A higher number means a crystal is more resistant to scratches.

For example:

  • Diamond (10) can scratch Quartz (7).

  • Quartz (7) can scratch Fluorite (4).

  • Fluorite (4) can scratch Calcite (3).

The opposite is not true.

A softer crystal cannot scratch a harder one.

Hardness Doesn't Mean "Unbreakable"

One of the biggest misconceptions is believing that a hard crystal can't break.

In reality, hardness only measures scratch resistance.

It does not tell us how well a crystal withstands knocks, drops or impacts.

For example:

  • Quartz has a Mohs hardness of 7, making it resistant to scratches.

  • Black Obsidian has a hardness of around 5 to 5.5, but because it is natural volcanic glass it can still chip if dropped.

  • Even Diamond (10), the hardest natural mineral, can chip if struck in the wrong direction.

Think of it this way:

Hardness = resistance to scratches.

Toughness = resistance to breaking.

They are two different things.

That's why softer crystals are often best stored separately or wrapped individually.

Which Crystals Need Extra Care?

Some crystals are naturally softer than others.

Satin Spar

With a Mohs hardness of around 2, Satin Spar scratches easily and should be kept dry and stored separately.

Lepidolite

Although solid to hold, Lepidolite contains delicate mica layers that can scratch or chip more easily than harder crystals.

Fluorite

Fluorite has beautiful natural colours but is softer than many common crystals and benefits from careful handling.

Which Crystals Are More Durable?

Some crystals are naturally more resistant to everyday scratches.

These include:

  • Quartz

  • Bloodstone

  • Agate

  • Jasper

While still deserving care, they are generally better suited to everyday carrying or frequent handling.

Crystal Jewellery and Hardness

Hardness can also help when choosing jewellery.

More durable crystals are often better suited to rings and bracelets, while softer crystals may be better suited to pendants or occasional wear.

Regardless of hardness, removing crystal jewellery before heavy work, gardening or sport is always recommended.

Can I store all my crystals together?

It's best to avoid storing very soft crystals with much harder ones, as scratches can occur over time.

Does a harder crystal have stronger energy?

No.

The Mohs Scale only measures scratch resistance and has no connection to a crystal's traditional meanings or metaphysical associations.

Is Black Obsidian a hard crystal?

Black Obsidian has a hardness of approximately 5 to 5.5, making it reasonably durable. However, because it is natural volcanic glass, it can still chip if dropped.

Why do some crystals feel hard if they're considered "soft"?
